A CCL injury might cause limping, reduced range of motion, or a swollen knee. Since this injury often involves a torn ligament, your veterinarian may recommend that your dog undergo a tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) surgery.
TPLO surgery stabilizes the affected knee of your dog so it can move normally by removing the need for the Cranial Cruciate Ligament. This will result in less pain and a reduced risk of further joint damage and reduce the progression of osteoarthritis. The procedure involves cutting the top of the tibia, rotating the bone, and changing its position to level the tibial plateau. The doctor will then secure it using a bone plate and combination of screws.
